Mayor Wolfe and the budget

In this paragraph, I will provide information about Huntington. The city of Huntington, W.Va. has a population of 49, 185. It has an area size of 15.9 square miles. Huntington has a total revenue estimate of $41,064, 610 in 2010 and $38,758,863 in 2009. It has a total expenditure estimate of $42,135,417 in 2010 and $38, 919,497. Huntington gets most of its revenue from business and occupational tax of $16,927,272 through 2009 and $17,395,121 through 2010. It also gets a lot of money from municipal service fees of $5,800,000 in 2009 and $5,900,000 in 2010.

Huntington spends most of its money on the police and fire departments. The Huntington Police Department got $10, 898,225 in 2009 and $11,580,414 for 2010. The Huntington Fire Department got $9,965,444 in 2009 and $10,271,811 in 2010.

In Mayor Kim Wolfe’s first year, the city has spent a lot of money for many things. The city spent about $800,000 on 25 paving projects and $4.85 million in revenue. He also launched a public awareness campaign about his spending plan. It includes many things like Huntington’s Web site, public access television, and signs along paved roads. In 2009, the West Virginia Legislature rejected municipal pension reform legislation for the third consecutive year. This puts pressure on Wolfe because it is in his hands to manage a $42 million budget with almost $9 million of it going toward pensions.

The city’s pension contribution is expected to rise to more then $21 million by 2023. Wolfe’s administration is developing a plan that is set for summer 2010. The new legislation plan gives cities the option of closing their existing retirement plans to new hires. It also refinances plans over a 40-year period to pay off their unfunded liabilities. Huntington’s liability is $130 million. I guess we will all see how to 2010 year plans out for Wolfe and his administration.
